What is Social Media?

Social Media are interactions among people in which they create, share / exchange information and ideas in virtual communities sharing the following characteristics:

  • Participation: Encourages contributions and feedback from everyone who is interested

  • Openness: Most of them are open to feedback & participation

  • Conversation: A two way conversation

  • Community: Allows communities to form quickly & communicate effectively and share common interests

  • Connectedness: Use of links to other sites, resources & people


Types of Social Media

Content Communities. Communities, which organise and share particular content around pictures and videos. Instagram / Youtube

Micro blogging. Allow users to exchange small elements of content -short sentences, individual images, or video links- and differs from a traditional blog in that its content is typically smaller in both actual and aggregated file size. Twitter

Wikis. Allow people to add a comment to or edit the information on them, acting as a communal document or database. Wikipedia

Podcasts. Audio and video files that is available by subscription. ITunes

Social Networks. These sites allow people to build personal web pages and then connect with friends to share content and communication. Facebook / Google+

Blogs. The best known form of Social Media, blogs are online journals with entries appearing with most recent first. Wordpress

Forums. Areas for online discussion, often around specific topics and interests. Are a powerful and popular element of online communities. TripAdvisor

Facebook | Is the world’s most popular social networking that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos, and video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family, classmates and colleagues

LinkedIn | The world’s largest professional network

Twitter | The fastest, simplest way to stay close to everything you care about. An information network

YouTube | Allows billions of people to discover, watch and share originally-created videos

Google+ | Is a social networking and identity service owned and operated by Google Inc.

Instagram | Is a fun and quirky way to share your life with friends through (pictures + videos)
